In the 2000 symposium, "Secret Lives of Women in the Arts: Creating Alternatives and Working the System" independent women in the arts discussed decisions women artists make when their vision for creative work doesn't fit or get support from established institutions, or traditional art avenues.

We asked the questions: "What really is an Independent Artist? What does that mean if you're also a woman, a woman of color, working class and/or a mother?" Working the System zeroed in on how women's strategies and access have changed in the last 25 years.
