WOMEN AROUND TOWN 

 

Tobey C. Moss Gallery features works on paper by Beth Van Hoesen in the mediums of aquatint, etching, and watercolor. Thru 6/30/11.

 

Linda Arreola, Poli Marichal, Marianne Sadowski and CiCi Segura Gonzalez are in "4" at Tropico de Nopal Gallery. Includes catalog with essays by Karen  Davalos and Dianna M. Santillano Romo. Opens 6/4 with Artist Conversation on 6/16. Thru 7/16/11. 

Platt and Borstein Galleries at AJU hosts Getting It Together featuring work by  Freyda Miller, Daveed Shwartz, and Nancy Kay Turner. Thru 8/14/11.

Lora Schlesinger gallery presents "Ann Chamberlin: South American Paintings," a series of colorful and enchanting works of oil on brass, and canvas, as well as gouache on paper.

A conversation between an artist and her materials is seen in "Dialogues" at FIG Gallery. Hillary Taub works with charcoal and acrylic to create figural abstractions. Opens: Sat. 6/4. Thru 6/25/11.

The human form is prominent in the ceramics and works on paper by Kim Tucker in "Loudmouth Ghosts and Reckless Sweethearts" at L2 Contemporary in downtown L.A.

"Hold Still" is an exhibition of photographs by Lauri Gaffin at Harris & Ruble Gallery. "Her photographs communicate her whimsical sense of humor and her irresistible attraction to beauty." 

 

Joanna Bielski: "Gravity Defied" is the current exhibition at Lois Lambert Gallery in Bergamot Station. With a bold palette, Bielski explores the relationship between the human body and the constraints of gravity resulting in some wonderful contorted images.

Koplin Del Rio debut the small assemblages of Mexican artist Marianela de la Hoz. "A Tale in Detail" explores he dark side of human nature.

 

 

 

WOMEN IN THE MUSEUMS:

Works by the "Mama of Dada" are now on view at the Oceanside Museum of Art. "The Virgin's Dream: Beatrice Wood Drawings and Ceramics" features work from the
1930s to the 1990s of drawings in watercolor, colored pencil and graphite, book illustrations, sketchbooks, figurative sculptures, vessels, plates, and a unique mobile that hung in the artist's home in Ojai, California. If you miss this exhibit then head to the Santa Monica Museum of Art in the fall (9/10/11-1/7/12).  

 

The Craft and Folk Art Museum is exhibiting Ann Weber's Love and Other Audacities (image left) that features cardboard sculptures and Jennifer Angus' magical installation, All Creatures Great and Small. Opens 5/21.Thru 9/11/11.

Washington D.C. based artist Linn Mayers' created a large-scale, site-specific wall drawing on the lobby wall of the Hammer Museum. Her intricate line drawings focus on the concept of time as she layers vibrant colors to suggest light and movement. Thru 11/6/11.

"Rodarte: States of Matter" is an installation at the MOCA Pacific Design Center that features the recent fashions and costumes designed by the talented sisters, Kate and Laura Mulleavy. Thru 6/5/11.

 

Human Nature: Contemporary Art from the Collection at LACMA includes work by Betye Saar, Mona Hatoum, Alison Saar, Linda Benglis, Ana Mendieta, Elizabeth Peyton , Carlee Fernandez, Hannah Wilke, Alexandra Grant among others. Thru 7/4/11.
