Artist Statement

I became fascinated by color at a very early age. My mother was not only a homemaker, but she was also an artist and a craftswoman; she taught me how to draw, paint and be creative between her other lessons on sewing, gardening and cooking. Today, I approach my artwork in a primal, bold way by using vivid hues and clean lines. I find color to be curative due to the emotional and perceptual influence it has on our well-being. I am also motivated by that healing relationship to preserve its pure, immediate and visual effect. In addition, I am tenacious about upholding a primary treatment of color in my work; this was how color was introduced to me as a child and remains valued to me as an adult.

My passion for both color and fabrics plays an influential role in my art practice. Color Crossing is a 48-piece installation that expresses a direct and instinctive application of color. Proposition Color—Yellow is part of a six-piece series that provides a surrendering of direct and bold color. Yellow’s offering is centered with smaller canvases of color, black and red. These mini-canvases serve as a centerpiece for its larger suggestion of color. Red Paisley and Crochet, both part of my Vintage Color Series, incorporate the use of vintage fabrics with bold color. I have a passion for bright and beautiful fabrics due to my mother's influence. Through my artwork, I hope to create and continue to preserve candidness for color.
