Artist Statement

My art is about visual history and comes from a spiritual place within. It is a reflection of an emotional journey with both positive and negative aspects. I don’t always know what the message will be at first. It comes with time, a little bit of torture, intense thought and a release from the cerebral as I focus on core emotions.

Using paint, threads and recycled sections of previous work, I build a visual environment layer by layer with each brush stroke. Combining tactile surface and enigmatic shapes balanced with color is vital in creating the rhythm of the work. Each image is a mystery to be uncovered during the process of creation. The visual manifestation of this journey eventually reaches a heightened state that translates into a visceral experience.

Bio

Marla Fields is a mixed media artist currently living in Los Angeles. She has been involved with the arts most her life and began to participate in bi-coastal group exhibitions at an early age. She eventually earned both a BA degree and an MA in 2-D Art from California State University, Northridge where she studied with Marvin Harden and Walter Gabrielson.

One professor was a minimalist the other was driven by emotions, so this proved to be a good combination as far as teaching her to create tension and excitement on the surface of a painting. Both men left their imprint on her and helped shape the mature artist she would later become. Travels to Japan, Korea and Thailand exposed her to eastern art and also played a major role in inspiring her work.

Fields has shown her mixed media paintings in several solo shows and numerous group exhibitions in Southern California as well as exhibiting her work internationally at various venues in Japan, Korea and Thailand.
